Since they are sticky and tend to collect dirt and scrap paper on them, most of us have to replace them every few months. The mat is an essential part of many projects, and it is so important that you have yours in the best shape possible.

Here’s a few tips to help you keep your mats clean and long lasting:

Don’t use the same part of the mat over and over again. Vary which portion you cut on by turning the whole thing. That way no one section of it gets overused, while the rest of the cutting mat remains clean and unused. Try to make the wear and tear even throughout and you will get a lot more life out of it. You can either turn the whole thing or use the arrows on your Cricut machine to reposition the image you will be working with so that it’s not always in the same top left corner.

Put some kind of protective cover over the mat when you’re not using it. Since it is adhesive, dust particles and dirt tend to stick and build up on it. This severely reduces the lifespan. Just some plastic wrap or a lint free cloth will work quite well.

Above all make sure you keep your Cricut mat clean! Take off all the scraps of paper that are stuck on each time you are finished. Wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth to remove any loose debris. It’s good to make sure your hands are clean too so you don’t put a ton of oil and grime on the mat while you are working. I’ve read that lint rollers work nicely since they are sticky too and will pick up those hard to get specks.

If you loose all the stickiness, then you could always use a little bit of tape on the corners to hold it down. This doesn’t void the warranty of your precious Expressions machine, and it works well in a pinch.
